Subject: [labmembers] SNF Mailing Lists under Badger ...

SNF Lab Members:

Yesterday, Mary Tang talked about mailing lists a bit:

> 2. SNF Emails: with the conversion, you may not be all subscribed to
> your lists as before. How to subscribe to email lists can be found
> here: http://snf.stanford.edu/labmembers/mailman.htm -- and please

I'd like to elaborate on this and get your feedback on a couple of issues.

First, we have converted all of the SNF mailing lists from the EZMLM
mail list manager to the Mailman mail list manager and have loaded the
archive of all old postings. To get to these archives sorted and
grouped in the same order as found in the Badger equipment tree, you can
go to:

http://snf.stanford.edu/Equipment/ArchiveByArea.html

At the moment, all mailing lists are still using the email addresses and
subscriptions as they existed under Coral. That is, you are all still
subscribed to all lists based on your Coral equipment qualifications as
coral_name@snf.stanford.edu. For most of you, that is then forwarded to
some_other_name@some_other_mail_host based on your email forwarding
preferences.

That is not a viable strategy for very long ... and soon subscriptions
will be using your Badger member name (which is and should be a valid
email address).

We have scripts in place that will initially subscribe you to all
appropriate equipment-specific mailing lists based on your Badger
equipment qualifications. Then, there is a second script that
automatically creates subscriptions to the labmembers mailing list based
on the "sifted and sorted" subscribers to all of the other lists.

I have not yet run the script that "reloads" all of the mailing list
subscriptions based on your current Badger equipment qualifications
because so many of you did not get your equipment qualifications
automatically migrated from Badger to Coral because your Coral
University ID did not match your Badger University ID. As we get more
and more of your equipment qualifications entered, however, we will soon
be in a position to make that change and then to assemble a new
labmembers@snf.stanford.edu list based on those tool-specific subscriptions.

My first question is: Do you want this script run so that you are
automatically subscribed to all mailing lists based on your current
Badger equipment qualifications or would you rather manually subscribe
to each list yourself? Note: many of you are qualified to use from
40-90 different tools.

Secondly, as I understand it, Badger will not automatically send out the
"subscribe me" to the appropriate mailing list when you are qualified to
use a new tool. When you are qualified on new tools in the future,
would you prefer to be responsible for subscribing yourself to the
appropriate mailing list or would you prefer that we have a mechanism to
periodically (and automatically) update subscriptions based on the
latest Badger equipment qualifications?

If you have any other questions or concerns about the SNF mailing lists,
you are welcome to address those to me as well.

Unless you have a response that the entire labmembers community needs to
see, please make sure that you reply to me rather than the entire SNF
labmembers mailing list so that we don't have a flurry of individual
responses. I will do my best to summarize what I learn and then
communicate that with all of you.

Thanks for your consideration,

John
